144. Video installation. 60'.
A lichen grows one millimeter per year. In 144 years, it reaches 144 millimeters — a length that becomes the symbol of a temporality radically different from our own. 144 condenses this imperceptible growth into a video that compresses time, revealing the extreme patience of organisms that outlast everything, indifferent to our frantic pace. The lichens, observed on gravestones and rocks, become witnesses to a duration beyond our grasp, where each millimeter marks a year of silent resistance.
This work questions our relationship to time by contrasting the geological slowness of lichens with the urgency of human life. Like a biological clock, it reminds us that living matter is not measured in seconds, but in cycles — those that excavate stone, those that transform matter, and those that, patiently, reinvent the world.
Un lichen grandit d’un millimètre par an. En 144 ans, il atteint 144 millimètres — une longueur qui devient le symbole d’une temporalité radicalement différente de la nôtre. 144 synthétise cette croissance imperceptible en une vidéo qui contracte le temps, révélant la patience extrême des organismes qui survivent à tout, indifférents à nos rythmes effrénés. Les lichens, observés sur des pierres tombales et des rochers, deviennent les témoins d’une durée qui nous échappe, où chaque millimètre est une année de résistance silencieuse.
Cette œuvre interroge notre rapport au temps, en opposant la lenteur géologique des lichens à l’urgence de nos vies. Comme une horloge biologique, elle rappelle que le vivant ne se mesure pas en secondes, mais en cycles — ceux qui excavent la pierre, ceux qui transforment la matière, et ceux qui, patiemment, réinventent le monde.
Part of my installation project Αἰών, developed during the Art Architecture Paysage residency around the notion of "excavation" between January and April 2023. Funded by Fonds de Dotation Verrecchia, managed with Manifesto Paris. Shown at at Chateau de la Maye in April 2023 and as a solo show at the Galerie de l'Ecole des Beaux Arts de Versailles from 5 to 19 October 2024.
