GALAXY 1879. 2023-2024. Photographic series.
In 1879, Anton de Bary coined the term symbiosis to describe the alliance between a fungus and an alga that gives rise to lichens. These organisms, which grow only about a millimeter per year, slowly excavate stone with geological patience, reducing it to dust—as if returning it to the cosmos. Galaxy 1879 transforms these tiny beings into constellations, revealing their ability to connect the microcosm and the macrocosm, human time and infinite time.
The lichens, photographed on gravestones dating from the late 19th century, become witnesses to a memory that transcends human scale. By layering temporalities—the one engraved in stone, that of our fleeting lives, and the cyclical one of the lichens that transform matter—this project invites us to perceive time at work, like stardust linking us back to the universe.
En 1879, Anton de Bary nommait la symbiose, cette alliance entre un champignon et une algue qui donne naissance aux lichens. Ces organismes, qui ne grandissent que d’un millimètre par an, excavent la pierre avec une lenteur géologique, la réduisant en poussière comme pour la rendre au cosmos. Galaxy 1879 transforme ces êtres minuscules en constellations, révélant leur capacité à lier le microcosme et le macrocosme, le temps humain et le temps infini.Les lichens, photographiés sur des pierres tombales datant de la fin du XIXe siècle, deviennent les témoins d'une mémoire qui dépasse nos échelles. En superposant les temporalités — celle, gravée dans la pierre, de nos vies éphémères, et celle, cyclique, des lichens qui transforment la matière — ce projet invite à voir le temps à l’œuvre, comme une poussière d’étoiles qui nous relie à l’univers.
